Resolutions

by

happy new yearBet the locker room was packed this morning, wasn’t it? Just chock full of people trying to carry out their New Year’s resolutions. Don’t worry. It won’t last.

Studies show that the vast majority of us don’t keep the resolutions we make for more than a few days – a month at most. I know why. It’s because we resolve to do a whole lot of things we don’t like. Things we don’t ever want to do – in January or any other time of the year. Things like cleaning out all of our closets…or giving up fattening foods…or getting completely caught up on our paperwork.
Feh! That’s the problem right there. Why don’t we ever resolve to do things we WANT to do?

Let’s start a trend and make our New Year’s resolutions things we’ll actually follow up on. I’ll start us off…
I resolve to eat chocolate in some form every day.

I resolve to hang out only with the people I like – a group that encompasses 99.999 percent of the known world. To heck with the few dorks I don’t want to be with.

I resolve to watch mindless television if that’s what makes me laugh and not feel like an idiot when I do.

I resolve not to read any book that bores me just because others tell me it’s an ‘important’ read. I was an English major and now I’m a writer so I know that ‘important’ doesn’t always mean ‘enjoyable.’

I resolve to be kind because it doesn’t cost anything and it makes everyone – myself included – feel a lot better about life.

I resolve to close my eyes to things that don’t matter – like my kids’ messy rooms – and my own, for that matter.

I resolve never to let the scale dictate how I feel about myself. Being healthy is good. Being stick-thin wouldn’t be.

I resolve to enjoy every minute I have with my husband and sons. They’re perfect and I’m lucky to have them.

I resolve to be grateful for the things I have and to forget about the things I don’t.

Life is full and fun and fabulous…what more could I ask for?
