Live different. That’s what I have been inspired to do after travelling over 1200 kilometers to experience two weeks in the poorest parts of Kenya. Although my trip is over, I have now found my inspiration and my journey has just begun.
I, like many others, have always been thankful for the life that I have here in Canada, loving family and friends, a safe home, the ability to go to school, work, and countless other privileges that are so often taken for granted. I’m thankful, so what? Sure it’s a nice thing to say, and it’s important to recognize, but being thankful doesn’t actually DO anything.
Travelling to Kenya and being thankful for what I have in Canada makes no difference to the orphan children that I met, being thankful didn’t help us to feed the village of 700 people. We have been given opportunities here in Canada that some children will only ever dream of. The reality that I can get up, eat breakfast, go to work, and earn a living is a fairy tale to them. Certainly we can do more than just be thankful.
We can live our days with purpose, intentionally make decisions that will be in the best interest of others, and not just ourselves. We can be conscious consumers and support products and companies that do good for the world. We can seek opportunities to improve the quality of life for individuals and families who are not able to do so. We can live different, and after what I’ve seen in this world of ours, it would be irresponsible of us to do otherwise.
